Haikuization

haikuization · word · validated

A reduction that keeps only the rhyme-words or line ends of an existing poem, leaving a shorter poem inside the longer one.

Provenance

  • Source: Oulipo, La Littérature potentielle (1973)
  • Attribution: reference — attested in a standard reference rather than traced to an origin
  • Checkability: source — decidable against the source text it was made from
  • Attested: author-stated — the originator set this rule down

Details

  • Kind: both
  • Languages: en, de, fr
  • Requires: tokens
  • Deterministic: yes
  • In other languages: Haikuisierung (de), Haïkuisation (fr)

Notes

Only the line-end reading is checked. The definition's "rhyme-words or line ends" reads as two readings, but this codebase's rhyme machinery always resolves to a line's final word regardless of whether it pronounces as a rhyme with anything else — rhyme_keys hands back that word whether or not two lines' keys ever intersect — so a rhyme-word reading distinct from the line-end reading is not constructible here. phonemes was added to requires in an earlier correction on the assumption the two readings could be told apart; they cannot, so that correction is reversed and this row runs on tokens alone. German declared: borderline, recorded rather than silently assumed. The name evokes a Japanese form neither language's version actually is — what "haikuization" checks is the Oulipo reduction (keep each line's last word, discard the rest), a purely positional operation on line ends that reads and means the same thing whichever language the source poem is in. The name's cultural loading is cosmetic, not part of what is checked.

Prompt hint

Keep only the rhyming words of each line and present what remains as the poem.
