Hemeling's letter-exchange

hemeling · letter · validated

An anagram of a name, explicated beneath it in rhymed verse. Both halves are checked: the first line must use exactly the letters of the source, and the lines under it must hold a rhyme scheme.

Provenance

  • Source: Johann Hemeling, Arithmetische Letter- oder BuchstabWechslung (1653); read here through Andreas B. Kilcher, mathesis und poiesis (Fink, 2003), p. 376
  • Attribution: primary — a named author, work and year this catalogue stands behind
  • Checkability: source — decidable against the source text it was made from
  • Attested: author-stated — the originator set this rule down

Details

  • Kind: restrictive
  • Languages: en, de
  • Requires: tokens, fold_diacritics, phonemes
  • Deterministic: yes
  • In other languages: Hemelings Buchstabwechslung (de), Échange de lettres de Hemeling (fr)

Notes

The tightest rule in the surveyed European material, because both halves are mechanically checkable where most combinatorial procedures have one half that is not. Hemeling's title says so directly: the anagrams are to be made "und durch Reime zu erklähren". He also specifies a Buchstabenwechsel-Tafel pre-computing combinations up to six elements, played across with lettered dice, and notes that as elements are added the count grows unmanageably — the source itself frames combinatorial explosion as a constraint on the method. Neither the tafel nor the dice are implemented here; only the rule is. The primary text has not been consulted directly. Kilcher, who read it, is named in the source for that reason.

Prompt hint

Rearrange the letters of a name into a new phrase, then explain the phrase in rhyming lines beneath it.

Parameters

Name Type Default Description
allow_identical boolean False Permit a word to rhyme with itself, as French rime riche does.
fold_diacritics boolean True Treat accented letters as their base letter, and ß as ss.
scheme string AA Rhyme pattern the explication must hold, one letter per line.
source string — The text this one was made from.
unknown_rhyme string undecidable What a line ending absent from the pronouncing dictionary means: leave the pair unscored (undecidable), let it satisfy the scheme (free), or fail it (strict).

en — this text satisfies the procedure.

listen
the letters of your name will turn and then
they say a truer thing than they did when

Parameters: source='silent'

Source: constructed example; the compound rule Hemeling's title states, with the shortest explication that can be said to rhyme

en — this text does not satisfy the procedure.

listen
the letters of your name will turn and then
they say a truer thing than they did now

Parameters: source='silent'

Source: constructed counterexample; scores 0.5 because the two halves are scored separately, and a writer fixes them by different means

Parameters: source='silent'

Source: constructed counterexample; the anagram alone is an anagram, and this row exists because Hemeling asks for more than one

Parameters: unknown_rhyme='free', fold_diacritics=True, source='Hemeling 1653', scheme='abccb', allow_identical=False

Rejected: wrong_line_count — 7 lines where the row wants 6, the anagram and then five. The unit as excerpted carries one line more than Hemeling's form.
