Intralingual translation

intralingual_translation · translation · catalogued

A rendering of a text into another register or period of its own language, rather than into a different one.

Provenance

  • Source: Roman Jakobson, On Linguistic Aspects of Translation (1959)
  • Attribution: primary — a named author, work and year this catalogue stands behind
  • Checkability: none — no computable acceptance criterion exists
  • Attested: author-stated — the originator set this rule down

Details

  • Kind: both
  • Languages: en
  • Requires: tokens
  • Deterministic: no
  • Also known as: rewording

Notes

No acceptance criterion exists. Register and period are properties of usage rather than of form. Deciding this needs two judgements at once: that the content survived, which is the translation problem, and that the register moved, which no lexicon encodes. A list of archaisms would decide something narrower than the definition claims, and passing it would not make a text a rendering of the source.

Prompt hint

Recast the passage in a different register of the same language.

Why this has no checker

This procedure has no computable acceptance criterion, so it will never be implemented. It is catalogued because the form belongs in an honest survey of the field, and denckring status counts it separately rather than reporting a gap that cannot close.
