Renga

renga · form · validated

A linked chain of alternating three-line and two-line stanzas, composed collaboratively so each link joins only to its neighbour.

Provenance

  • Source: Traditional; Japanese linked verse, formalised by the 13th century
  • Attribution: traditional — classical or folk; no single origin to name
  • Checkability: self — decidable from the text and its parameters alone
  • Attested: codified — formulated as a rule by a tradition rather than declared by an author

Details

  • Kind: restrictive
  • Languages: en
  • Requires: tokens, syllables.heuristic
  • Deterministic: yes
  • In other languages: Renga (de), Renga (fr)

Notes

Only the 5-7-5 / 7-7 alternation is checked. That a renga is composed collaboratively, and that each link joins only to its neighbour rather than to the whole poem, are the form's substance and neither is a property of the text — a solo renga whose links each answer the entire poem passes all the same.

Prompt hint

Alternate three-line and two-line stanzas, each linking only to the one before.

Parameters
